Upper Mattaponi Tribal Enrollment Guide
Citizenship criteria for formal enrollment as a citizen of the Upper Mattaponi Tribe is governed by the Upper Mattaponi Constitution ARTICLE III – CITIZENSHIP
Citizenship Criteria. The enrolled citizens of the Tribe shall consist of :
- All persons listed on the official membership roll of the tribe as of December 1, 2022.
- A lineal biological descendant of a person listed on the official membership roll dated December 1, 2022.
- A person omitted from the membership roll dated July 15, 2003, which served as the foundation for the December 1, 2022, roll, who can provide evidence of a biological relationship with a person listed on the 2003 roll, and their lineal descendants who can provided substantial genealogical evidence of a lineal biological decendent from such person, subject to approval by Chief, and subject to confirmation by the Council.
Fraud. “Any person found to have knowingly committed fraud in attaining citizenship in the Tribe, including but not limited to knowingly have submitted falsified documents, shall forfeit citizenship in the Tribe.”
Enrollment in Another Tribe Prohibited. “An enrolled citizen of the Tribe shall not be permitted to be dually enrolled as a member of another Indian tribe without forfeiting citizenship in the Tribe.”
Step-By-Step Guide
Ready to navigate through enrollment? Here's a quick overview of the process:
- Inquire with the Director of Enrollment, Wilma Hicks, by phone or email. You must provide your full name and the full names of your parents.
- Complete the Enrollment Application Packet, including:
- A copy of the certified birth applicant's birth certificate must be included in your packet.
- Payment of the non-refundable $24 processing fee.
- Await review by the Membership Committee as outlined in your application packet.
Document Requirements
Whether you are seeking enrollment for the first time or enrolling a new child, an enrollment packet must be completed, along with a copy of the applicant's certified birth certificate and a non-refundable processing fee of $24 (subject to change).
